While it is true that you can’t make everyone love you – you can, however, be someone that you would be proud to be around and take specific steps to build positive and meaningful relationships at work. Here are 5 very simple ways that you can show your peers, in everyday interactions, that you are committed to working together and being someone they can count on!

1. Be Kind

There is little that is more off-putting than the co-worker that never smiles or says hi when they walk by. A little kindness and a polite disposition goes a long way when trying to build healthy relationships. A gentle smile or have a good day is sure to set a tone of a willingness to get along.

4. Be Proud, But Humble

You can and should be proud of your accomplishments, but overconfidence and arrogance is often detrimental. When you share your success and give credit to well-deserving others it is a sign of unity. If your peers feel like you are out for number one, then they will always be cautious around you.

2. Lend Support

We all have a stake in the success of the company, and rarely would it be expected that anyone is trying to sabotage good results. When someone you are working with takes on a project lend them your support. Even if you can’t physically help them just an encouraging word could make a world of difference.

5. Remain Tactful

Whether it is in everyday watercooler talk or if you are giving some difficult feedback, you must remain tactful. Before sharing a joke at the watercooler or giving your opinion take a step back and ask yourself if it is helpful, appropriate, or kind. If there is even a slight bit of hesitation think twice before saying anything.

3. Show Respect

While respect should be always be a two-way street, you make a conscious decision as to whether or not to be respectful. If you feel like you are not being treated fairly then you owe it to the person to have a conversation about it. If you find you are talking about others instead of to them, you are not showing them respect.

What Goes Around, Comes Around!

They say that what you put out there comes back to you tenfold – so the golden rule is to treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Of course the biggest key in all of this is simply showing up every day, working hard and being a contributing member to the success of the company!
