Tommie’s Manpower Story

What was it like before you used Manpower Maine?

After getting out of the military, we moved to Maine and everything was new to me. I was looking for a job in accounting and I overheard someone talking about (company) using Manpower to hire temporary personnel.

I was nervous because I had never used a temporary agency prior to this. I asked people about Manpower and I heard so many great things so, I decided to send them my resume. Next thing I knew, I recieved a call saying they would like to do an interview. Soon after this I was informed that (company) actually had openings. This assignment was supposed to be temporary but they extended my contract yearly.

Once I completed my bachelors degree in Business, I thought beginning my career job-search on my own would be easy. I tried for a week and knew it was not the perfect timing. If I wanted to get immediate results, I needed to get back with Manpower.

What specific results did you get from Manpower Maine?

I’ve recieved fast results in obtaining a job through Manpower three different times. They are very diligent in making the process go as fast and smooth as possible. Every client requires different paperwork that Manpower provides them. Manpower stays in contact with you every step of the way during the whole process from your interview, to the paperwork, the background check, and so on.

On the first day of work, they provide you all the information you will need as to where you will meet your new employer, what paperwork you may need to take to them, etc.

Manpower employees are very friendly. They want to find you a job that works for you.

How did you feel about working with Manpower Maine?

I love working for Manpower. I’ve personally worked with them for three years straight. I took a little time off and recently came back. The thing I love most is that Manpower employees take the time to learn about you. They use this information in selling you to a prospective employer. Their goal is to match your experience with the perfect job. The most important thing is I’ve never felt pressured to do anything I was not comfortable with.

Editor’s Note: Tommie was recently hired on permanently through her most recent assignment and the Manpower team is thrilled for her and very appreciative of all her hard work. Congratulations Tommie – and thank you for choosing Manpower Maine!

Heidi’s Manpower Story

What Is A Market Engagement Manager?

I am responsible for managing the marketing and communications efforts for all Manpower offices in Maine. This includes using a variety of marketing platforms to let people know what positions we have available at any given time, to explain to businesses why Manpower Associates are the best in the world and just overall to get the community to engage in conversations about the world of work.

I love that every day I get to be creative, try new things and find innovative ways to provide the best brand experience to all those that choose to work with Manpower.

What Do You Like Most About Manpower?

I have never worked for a company that treats everyone with such a high-level of respect, no matter how they’ve connected, whether as a job-seeker or as a high-level executive looking for staffing assistance. I remember when I first joined the Manpower team, a little over a year ago; I was kind of taken aback by how often team members said thank you to each other and how they supported each other. The level of respect and comradery is not just a face that is put on in public, it is one that radiates through each and every one of our offices every single day.

What Is The Hardest Part Of Your Job?

I have to say, I really think I have the best job in the world because every day is different and I also get to be creative. If I have to choose something, I guess it would be getting distracted. A lot of my job revolves around social media and it is easy to get sidetracked. In addition, being a creative person ideas are constantly flowing so sometimes I have to put my headphones on and force myself to focus on one project.

Best Professional Accomplishment?

I feel fortunate to have had the ability to build a successful career even with the obstacles I have faced. I was unable to attend college after school and one of the first places I went to get work was Manpower. For a summer I did several temporary, administrative jobs and then moved on to find employment waitressing, then to sales, and sales ended up morphing into marketing. While I know that I worked hard to get to where I am, I also have a ton of respect for the organizations I have worked for that were willing to help me grow and take a risk on me.

Favorite Place In Maine?

Really? I have to narrow it down to one? I am going to break the rules and give you two! First and foremost, and without question, Lewiston. While it is no secret that we have had our challenges over the course of time, this community is amazing. We have so many caring people in our city that are working tirelessly to make it great. We have arts, culture, amazing restaurants and all around great people. And, then I just love the greater Houlton area! My husband’s family is from up there and I fell in love with the area the first time I visited. The scenery is breathtaking, so much opportunity for adventure and the people are just some of the kindest individuals in the world!

Sarah’s Manpower Story

How Long Have You Been With Manpower?

I joined the Manpower Maine team 2.5 years ago when I moved from Nashville to Maine. I started my role here in the Assistant Recruiter position – which is a support staff role here at Manpower. After some time I was promoted to the role of Staffing Specialist, and just recently I was promoted to a new role here as a Client Solutions Specialist.

Tell Me A Little Bit About Your New Position?

Well, you see, what is most exciting about this new role is it’s like having the best of both worlds. I still get to work hand in hand with candidates and help find them a job that is perfect for them and meet the needs of our current clients. But, in addition I get to spend the other half of my time making new connections.

I thoroughly enjoy making new connections, and while this role will take me out of my comfort zone a bit, I am excited because I love a challenge. I want to learn about all the businesses in Northern and Down East Maine, I know we have unique hiring challenges in “the county”, and I want to help my clients solve a real business problem, which is attracting and retaining amazing talent!

What Do You Like Most About Manpower?

There is nothing more satisfying then working for a company that truly values their employee’s work & home life balance. As a young professional I want the ability to grow in my career, and I appreciate that my management team cared enough to recognize my strengths and provide me with the opportunity to grow those skills.

I am thrilled to say that I work with the best team of professionals in all of Maine. That isn’t just our team here in the Bangor office, it is all across the state. Our offices collaborate well and with technology we may be miles away but ultimately my team is right by my side all the time!

What Is Your Favorite Thing To Do In Maine?

Anything that involves enjoying the beautiful landscape of Maine, whether it’s taking a long, scenic drive or walking along one of the many beaches – Maine has it all! This state is absolutely stunning. I consider myself lucky to have landed here!

A Client’s Manpower Story

How is “Matt” fitting in ?

Matt is a great addition to our team in Retail Operations. Including Matt, there are 13 employees in Retail Operations and he fits in extremely well with everyone; all of his co-workers enjoy having him in the department and working with him. He is extremely courteous with both his internal customers (co-workers) and external customers. Her in Deposit Ops, while we do expect a lot from our employees-we also want work to be fun and enjoyable, and Matt’s personality fits right in with our philosophy. He’s focuses on his work yet is very personable and displays a high level of enthusiasm, humor and spontaneity, he truly is a great asset to the Retail Ops team.

Tell us a little about Matt’s work ethic, attitude?

We were, and continue to be, impressed with how quickly Matt learns a new task, he is extremely easy to train and is very eager to learn all he can. He regularly completes work ahead of schedule and consistently finds the right balance between volume and quality. He works independently on duties he’s already been trained on and isn’t afraid to as a question if he is uncertain on something. He takes pride in his work and is very thorough and I know the work that leaves his desk is complete and accurate.

What about attendance?

Matt is completely reliable, punctual and he begins each day eager to face any new challenges that may come his way. He easily adjusts his schedule whenever necessary and is willing to work extra hours when needed.

We are very lucky to have Matt as part of our team.

Editor’s Note: Due to confidentiality agreements we have chosen to remove the client’s name along with changing the name of the associate. We regularly request performance reviews for our associates to make sure that the opportunities we provide continue to be good fits.

Testimonials

Chris’ Manpower Story

Can you tell us about your experience with Manpower?

I was enrolled in school and looking for employment when I learned about Manpower. I didn’t quite know what to expect when I first made an account on the Manpower website, but the very next day I received a phone call and over the next 15 minutes or so we went through my employment history, my interests, my skills, and more to develop a more complete profile.

Tell us a little about how you came to find your job?

After completing my profile I was asked to check back weekly to see if any jobs came available that matched my skills, and in the meantime, I was able to browse the list of available positions myself. It was there that I spotted the IT position I am in now.

At first [company] was seeking a candidate available to work 3 full days a week, but as I was a student I only had afternoons available.

So how was Manpower able to help?

Manpower was fantastic. They negotiated for me and [Company] agreed to have me come in every weekday afternoon instead. After a pretty cool video interview process I was offered the position and accepted.

I really feel like the Manpower team helped me each step of the way and made the most of my potential. I worked for 12 short weeks as a temp for [company] through Manpower, and then [company] decided to hire me on full time.

Now I am looking forward to continue to develop my career there.

Editor’s Note: Chris is a great example of how work to understand the needs of both our associates and clients and work to build a bridge to support everyone involved. Congratulations Chris on your career accomplishment and we hope your future is filled with great success!

Testimonials

The Day In The Life Of A Senior Recruiting Specialist

How Long Have You Been With Manpower?

I joined the Manpower Maine team 10 years ago. The first 6 years I held the role of a Staffing Specialist and for the last 4 years have held the title of Senior Recruiting Specialist.

What Does a Typical Day Of Work Look Like For You?

Every day is so different, so I can’t confidently say there is such a thing as a typical day. But what is great about that is that I am still learning new things all the time. Some days I am primarily focused on filling open jobs with the most qualified candidate and other days I am finding ways to bring new candidates to Manpower or out seeking new business client relationships.

I conduct a lot of interviews with job seekers. There are a variety of ways that candidates come to Manpower. I meet them in my office, or at career fairs, we use technology to have virtual interviews when the candidate is from away, and I also host on-site interviews at our clients’ facilities.

I spend a lot of time providing customer service to our current associates and business partners. This could include performance reviews, worksite tours, rewarding associates for stellar performance and safety on the job, and coaching or counseling associates on job performance if necessary.

What Is The Most Rewarding Part of Your Job?

Without doubt it is connecting a job seeker to a satisfying position with one of my clients. Making that connection not only makes the candidate happy but it eases a burden on my clients. When a client is happy with the associates we send them, they keep coming back and that leaves me feeling fulfilled.

What Is The Hardest Part Of Your Job?

Navigating the misconceptions that seem to surround the staffing industry.

What Do You Mean By Misconceptions?

I think a lot of people believe we only have temporary positions, or that working with an agency is only for those that can’t find a job themselves, and that could not be further from the truth.

We offer everything from temporary work to high-level permanent positions. We also help our associates get their foot in the door at some of the area’s top employers every single day! Many of these companies only hire new employees through Manpower, and I have helped countless associates find their dream career.

We also find that some candidates believe they are guaranteed employment when they apply with Manpower, and while we strive to find the right fit for all candidates that walk through our doors – employment is never guaranteed. Just like any other employer, we match a candidate’s skills and experience to the positions we have open, and we also assess employment history and other employment verification processes to ensure we deliver the best candidates for the job.

What Piece Of Advice Would You Give To Job Seekers?

Know what you want out of your career, and work hard for it. So many times when we ask a candidate what type of work they are looking for the response is, “anything”. That answer does not help us place you in a position that will allow you to be successful.

It would be better if you knew what things you like to do, what work environments you thrive in and what your long-term career goals are. When you can effectively communicate that, it allows us to be able to better serve you.

What Qualities Does A Recruiting Specialist Need?

Patience. Sense of urgency. Ability to multitask and change gears quickly. Customer-focused attitude.

Anything Else You Think People Should Know?

That Manpower genuinely cares about everyone we work with, whether that be our candidates, associates, business partners or our internal staff. We are proud of the fact that we provide a valuable service and that our hard work can literally change the lives of our associates.
